Our History

The Lactalis story in the UK started in London in 1988 with the acquisition of a small importer and packer of speciality cheeses: David Brough Gourmet Foods.

In 1993, the UK became part of a network of commercial subsidiaries created to develop sales for the products and brands outside its core French market. Established in South London, Lactalis in the UK has continued to prosper through developing sales of all Group products in the local market.

In 2005, Lactalis purchased A. McLelland and Son Limited; a Scottish based cheese manufacturer with a factory in Stranraer, which included The Caledonian Cheese Company and McLelland Cheese Packing, and whose portfolio included the Seriously Strong brand. This acquisition included a shareholding in the Orkney Cheese Company and Dairy Solutions. At the same time, the Groupe purchased the Italian Galbani business and Lactalis UK took over responsibility for the Galbani business here in the UK.

In 2006, a joint venture was created between the Lactalis Groupe and Nestle, covering 9 European countries,  and Lactalis Nestle Chilled Dairy was established in the UK. This newly formed business has a well-known portfolio of yogurts, including Ski, the first yogurt launched in the UK in 1965 and Munch Bunch. The range of products also included a variety of chilled desserts based on the Nestle confectionary brands, which today include Aero, Milky Bar, Smarties, Yorkie and Rolo.

In 2009, Lubborn Cheese Limited was integrated into the Lactalis McLelland Group, and has since become the largest producer of soft cheese in the UK, including brie and goats cheese.

In 2010, Lactalis acquired Rachel's Dairy Limited, who are the number two brand in the UK for organic yogurts, and the number one in the UK for organic flavoured big pot yogurts. Rachel's became fully integrated into the Groupe in 2012, and their manufacturing facility is based in Aberystwyth on the mid-Wales coast.

Present Day

The Lactalis UK corporate office is based in Redhill, Surrey, where the commercial and support operations for both Lactalis McLelland and Lactalis Nestle Chilled Dairy work closely together, united in the same ambition to create the highest quality dairy products and bring them to the broadest range of consumers throughout the UK.

In the UK, Lactalis has manufacturing sites in Stranraer, Aberystwyth and Lubborn, and in each area we are one of the major employers, with an important role to play in the local economy and community.
